Dr. Stone grew up in Torrance, California, in the Los Angeles area, and graduated magna cum laude from UCLA with a bachelor’s degree in biology. He left California to pursue graduate work, earning his MPH at The University of Texas Health Sciences Center at Houston. After graduation he worked for a year in the Epidemiology Research Unit at the SPH. He then continued his eastward migration to attend medical school at Georgetown University in Washington, DC.
From high school and pre-med days, Dr. Stone has maintained an abiding interest in family medicine, with its emphasis on broad spectrum practice and long-term relationships with patients and their families. He did his residency at the University of Missouri in Columbia, and served as chief resident in his third year. While there he had the opportunity to have continuity practices in the academic environment of the tertiary medical center in Columbia (population 65,000 at the time) and in the small community of Fulton (population 10,000), with its fifty bed hospital.
Dr. Stone worked in private practice in Northern Virginia and Pennsylvania for three years following residency, to gain “seasoning” as a clinician. He honed clinical and teaching skills further by participating in the Rural Fellowship of East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, and then began his academic career at the ETSU Family Practice Residency in Kingsport. After three years in Kingsport, Dr. Stone and his wife, Terri, moved back to her native state of Missouri. There he was on faculty at the University of Missouri-Columbia, and served as the medical director of Callaway Physicians, the rural residency site in Fulton.
In 2005, Terri Stone, an oncology nurse practitioner, accepted a position with the Mayo Hospital in Phoenix, on their Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, so once again the Stones pulled up stakes to move to another region of the country. For Dr. Stone, it was a return to the West, a very familiar part of the country.
