conferences & workshop

A variety of scheduled presentations and workshops play an integral role in the educational experience at the PBH Residency. Daily Noon Conferences are intended to enhance the entire spectrum of skills required as a practicing Family Physician. Several different formats are utilized to help achieve this goal, from didactic presentations to case conferences to journal clubs. Some highlights of the Noon Conference schedule are:

  • Regular sessions focused on the core medical areas of Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, OB, GYN, Surgery, Sports Medicine and Orthopedics, Behavioral Health, and Geriatrics.
  • Evidence-Based Medicine Journal Club, where recent significant research findings are analyzed for their applicability to patient care. While one of the educational principles of the residency is that the practice of EBM should be a daily occurrence in all practice environments and in no way limited to monthly discussions around a conference table, the journal club gives residents a chance to continue to hone their EBM skills under faculty guidance.
  • Pharmacology presentations given by the Pharm D's at PBH.
  • Participation and leadership in the hospital-wide Morbidity and Mortality and Tumor Board conferences, where residents present the cases used for discussion.
  • Boards Review sessions led by the Chief Residents.
  • Residents are expected to present one Noon Conference per year, on a topic of their choosing.
  • Two sessions per month focus on Practice Management, with one of these specifically devoted to Coding.

The FMC Noon Conferences at PBH have been approved for CME, and physicians from outside of the program are welcome to attend. They are held in the West Auditorium and/or Wellness Center at 12:30 PM. A general template of the Noon Conference schedule for any given month can be found here (in Microsoft Word format).

"Block End" occurs on the last Thursday of the month, where all residents are pulled out of their other duties, and the entire afternoon is set aside for meetings and conferences. A residents-only meeting and a resident/faculty/staff meeting provide for opportunities to discuss issues of importance to the residency and to the FMC clinic, including the business aspects of the practice and the day-to-day operation of the clinic. This is followed by a Support Group for the first-year residents and a Balint Group for the upper-level residents. A two-hour conference slot then allows for teaching and discussion of topics too broad or significant to be handled adequately in the Noon Conference format. Block End concludes with an informal social outing arranged by the Chief Residents to celebrate the completion of another month.

The core workshops and conferences noted above are supplemented by:

  • Case discussions for the inpatient team led by 'guest' attending in Internal Medicine
  • Daily talks given by residents and attending on the inpatient team as part of teaching rounds
  • The continual case discussion and learning as residents precept patients in the FMC clinic
