The following training and certifications are obtained by residents during their orientation at PBH:

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) - The ACLS Provider Course, from the American Heart Association, provides the knowledge and skills needed to evaluate and manage the first 10 minutes of an adult ventricular fibrillation/ventricular tachycardia (VF/VT) arrest. Providers are expected to learn to manage 10 core ACLS cases: a respiratory emergency, four types of cardiac arrest (simple VF/VT, complex VF/VT, PEA and asystole), four types of prearrest emergencies (bradychardia, stable tachycardia, unstable tachycardia and acute coronary syndromes) and stroke.

Neonatal Resusciatation Program (NRP) - This course, from the American Academy of Pediatrics, has been designed to teach an evidence-based approach to resuscitation of the newborn. The causes, prevention, and management of mild to severe neonatal asphyxia are carefully explained so that health professionals may develop optimal knowledge and skill in resuscitation.

Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) - The ALSO course was originated by Family Medicine practictioners in Wisconsin, and is now offered through the American Academy of Family Practice. The ALSO Provider Course is a two-day course for all maternity care providers including physicians, nurse midwives, registered nurses, and other clinicians. Using an evidence-based curriculum, the course provides a short amount of lecture time and many interactive workstations utilizing pelvic mannequins and other appropriate medical equipment. The objectives are to discuss methods of managing pregnancy and birth urgencies and emergencies, which may help standardize the skills of practicing maternity care providers, and to demonstrate content and skill acquisition as demonstrated by successful completion of the course written exam and megadelivery testing station.

The costs of these training courses are covered by the Family Medicine Residency.
